Mechanisms of Intelligence

Adam John Mitchell / Comment on this

The robots in these works represent egos related to consciousness demonstrating three elements of intelligence: Learning, Reasoning, and Conscience. These three pieces are arranged as a triptych but can be shown as individuals. The set of three paintings tell a story, and through learning and reasoning, the little robot named Ego reaches a higher state of consciousness by attaining altruism. The earth constitutes all human hearts; through this connection, Ego transcends to its highest state of intelligence. [...]

The Construction of "Frank, Lou, and George" and "Looking Through the Shields"

Adam John Mitchell / Comment on this

I was vaccinated and boosted, wore masks, and socially distanced, but I still contracted it.  For the first five days, I had a fever and congestion with some chest pain.  My throat was raspy, [...]

The Construction of "Dichotomous: A Bifurcated Society and the Mechanism of Fear"

Adam John Mitchell / Comment on this

In my artwork, I put two robots in a confrontation with each other that represent opposing beliefs or ideas. The instinct is to demonize one side and champion the other, but I chose to take a different perspective. Though there are two opposing sides, the fear that drives each side's negative behaviors is the SAME root cause on either side. It is the same human weakness on each side. The mistrust, the fear, the conspiracies; that was the hate, our nature, our violence, that lies within us, as humans, that puppet our nature, no matter the side one's allegiance is sworn. The puppets, the robots, depicted in my painting are representational of this dark nature, within, that perpetuates the fight between oppositions. We are puppets, robots, to both our positive and weak natures as fallible humans. Humans are humans no matter which side one adheres to; and both sides succumb to their weaknesses: "Mechanisms of Fear," fear of what one does not understand, misunderstanding each other from ignorance, poor communication, conspiracies develop from paranoia, and violence. This energy is in either side of our bifurcated society, driving us all. [...]

The Making of "Isotherm Conscience"

Adam John Mitchell / Comment on this

This piece is an 11×14 inch oil painting titled "Isotherm Conscience" (20 by 23 inches with frame). Isotherms are the lines on weather maps that delineate temperature. I superimposed a similar pattern as isotherms but made the isotherm pattern out of color depicting Greta Thunberg's image.  Greta brings conscience to isotherms; plus the lines create motion and emotion in her depiction. I framed it in my shop, handmade, with local walnut wood.        Step 1: I first painted an underpainting and value structure for the painting.     Step 2: I painted the isotherm pattern with a transparent earth color.     Step 3: I then began to break [...]

Making the work "Consumer Emissions"

Adam John Mitchell / Comment on this

Click this link to see a zoom-view of "Consumer Emissions"             This is the story of making "Consumer Emissions." I first created three studies to experiment with the mediums and imagery, pictured below.  The mediums I used were Gum Arabic (l'Aquarelle French watercolor) and Polychromos (Faber-Castell oil-based color pencils with Caran d'Ache luminous white) on Crescent watercolor board. I wanted to create an atmospheric landscape using Gum Arabic (watercolor) but with the surreal imagery made from Polychromos (archival color pencil) while they attain the same space and with atmospheric perspective.  I was interested in capturing the fine richness [...]

Stillwater River, Dayton Ohio

Adam Mitchell / Comment on this

This painting is an oil on canvas by Adam Mitchell painted in an experimental style based on Divisionist color theory in linear directional patterns. The colors are carefully chosen at specific measurements of hue, saturation, and brightness of value to create optical effects along with the illusion of depth and volume. Essentially this expresses the interconnectedness of nature and the movement of forces in the universe. [...]

Matting Works on Paper in My Studio

Adam John Mitchell / Comment on this

I'm enjoying using my mat cutter!     Each piece is put together with high-quality, PH balanced foamcore and lightfast matboard using the hinge system. The artwork is hung in the matting with the t-hinge method to allow the art to be comfortably suspended within the frame.    The next step is choosing the glass and frame followed by the final assembly.                                                           [...]
