Isotherm Conscience

This piece is an 11×14 inch oil painting titled "Isotherm Conscience" (20 by 23 inches with frame). Isotherms are the lines on weather maps that delineate temperature. I superimposed a similar pattern as isotherms but made the isotherm pattern out of color depicting Greta Thunberg's image.  Greta brings conscience to isotherms; plus the lines create motion and emotion in her depiction. I framed it in my shop, handmade, with local walnut wood.

Step 1: I first painted an underpainting and value structure for the painting.

Step 2: I painted the isotherm pattern with a transparent earth color.

Step 3: I then began to break down the pattern into colors.

Step 4: I continued breaking down the pattern into colors, specifically arranging complementary color sets that optically blend at a distance.  Though the colors are complementary, I kept the value structure in harmony with the original underpainting.

I then made a walnut frame for this piece from local hardwoods. I got the wood from Live Edge Detroit which processes wood collected from tree removal services. They then sell cured slabs to the public.

From the slab, I milled out one-inch by four-inch walnut boards.

I glued the assembly together. No nails or screws in the construction of the piece.

Finished walnut frame. Hand sanded to 600 grit with Danish Oil.

Painting is carefully placed in the frame:
